These are the longest standard return windows we have verified, taken from what each retailer publishes for general merchandise. A generous window is genuinely useful for gifts, for seasonal buying, and for anything you need to try properly before deciding.
A long window is rarely the whole policy
Retailers that advertise a year are usually describing their best case, not their only case. The same policy often shortens sharply for electronics, opened software, mattresses, swimwear, jewellery and final sale items. The headline number and the number that applies to your purchase are frequently not the same.
Conditions tighten as the window lengthens
Long windows tend to arrive with stricter requirements: original packaging kept intact, tags still attached, proof of purchase available months later. Some retailers switch the refund to store credit after a certain point rather than refusing the return outright.
When the clock starts
This matters more than people expect. Some windows run from the purchase date, others from the delivery date, and for pre-orders or backorders those can be weeks apart. For gifts, a few retailers run the window from the holiday rather than the order.
What to check before you buy
Read the quoted sentence on the store page, confirm your category is not carved out, and note which date starts the count. Then treat the window as a deadline rather than a cushion.
